Objective
This course seeks to foster the development of creativity and imagination by training the eye and exposing students to different aesthetic approaches. The course is a workshop grounded in artistic and photographic theory that relies on the work of great photographers to help guide students to creative photographic production. The goal of the course is a dynamic evolution of style which will refine photographic technique and artistic vision as it encourages an open exchange of ideas between students and instructors.

The course’s key concepts are learning how to use and manipulate artificial lighting, like quartz tube lights, camera flashes, studio lighting and other accessories. Students will learn about lighting schemes like those used in portrait work and fashion photography. This course also covers advanced Photometry, and color temperature management, both with film and digitally and in various camera formats. Students will study the works of selected authors, necessary workshop dynamics, and theoretical contributions to photography and art. All students will develop a characteristic style and will be provided with a form-guide to keep a record of their work.

Introduction to the basic operation of a camera: aperture, speed, exposure and sensitivity of the film. Reflex camera management with instruction on manual functions (digital and analog). Photometry and how to use natural light and manipulate artificial lighting. The course also covers information on types of lenses, filters, color and flashes. Students will be provided with expressive resources and instruction in composition. The course will end with a study of methods of analysis of photography works.

Students will learn how to use the editing tools interface, including color management, color settings, profiles and management of color spaces, editing tool calibration and applied color theory. The course seeks to help students develop a web portfolio, image optimization skills, quality printing techniques, and learn how to monitor and implement ICC profiles. The course will discuss how to create professional quality images, handle color contrast, assemble hyper-realistic photomontages, and how to edit video frame to frame in Photoshop. Instructors will teach students how to face complicated image and resolution problems through interactive exercises. Digital manipulation in combination with photo production, digital matte painting, digital restoration will also be discussed.

The course will focus on key concepts in lighting and the creation of lighting schemes. Students will work with artificial lighting, such as quartz tube light, camera flashes and electronic studio flashes, and will learn about lighting schemes like those used in portrait work and fashion photography. Students will also learn how to illuminate a set with main and secondary lighting of different intensity to achieve effects like: white backgrounds, high contrast shadows, etc. Students will be required to complete a creative project that involves designing a lighting scheme. This course also covers advanced Photometry, and color temperature management, both with film and digitally and in various camera formats. The course begins with an introduction to digital photography where the halide is now seen as a pixel. All photographers will need to develop their artistic perspective and individual aesthetic. Each student will be assigned a form-guide to keep track of their work so they can see a record of their progress. It will also contain advice for the student on how to professionally present their work in a portfolio and display it in galleries.

Objective

The course seeks to provide students with conceptual and practical skills to create and execute documentary photography projects, providing them with an opportunity to gain fieldwork experience.
The type of training can help students work with modern media on editorial portraits, landscapes, stories on location, photo illustration and photo editing. The numerous features and possibilities of contemporary documentary photography will be studied and discussed.
